The O1 tool steel round rod has been precision ground and polished, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A681 and Society of Automotive Engineers SAE J437 specifications, and has a precision tolerance. The O1 tool steel grade has better machinability than A2 tool steel. It must be hardened in oil, which can be done at relatively low temperatures for good dimensional stability. The polished finish offers a smooth surface with few imperfections. The rod has been ground to achieve the precise shape and size.Steel is an iron alloy with carbon and other elements that modify the steel to achieve specific properties. In general, steels with higher carbon content have greater strength, hardness, and wear resistance, while those with lower carbon content have more formability, weldability, and toughness. Carbon steels, which include most AISI-SAE grades in the 1000 range, are classified by their level of carbon content as low (below 0.3%), medium (0.3% to 0.6%) and high (0.6% and above). Alloy steels, which include AISI-SAE grades in the 1300 and 4000 ranges and above, incorporate elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and nickel to modify properties like machinability and corrosion resistance. Tool steels, which include most grades with a letter and number grade designation, have high carbide content for wear resistance, high hardness, and the ability to hold a cutting edge. Some tool steels are designed to resist deformation when used in elevated temperatures.Tensile strength, used to indicate a material’s overall strength, is the peak stress it can withstand before it breaks. Wear resistance indicates the ability to prevent surface damage caused by contact with other surfaces. Toughness describes the material's ability to absorb energy before breaking, while hardness (commonly measured as indentation hardness) describes its resistance to permanent surface deformation. Formability indicates how easily the material can be permanently shaped. Machinability describes how easily it can be cut, shaped, finished, or otherwise machined, while weldability characterizes the ability to be welded.

Planning on making a few burnishing rods with it. Looks like it'll do the trick. Exactly what I need/want.The track rods on my 1977 Craftsman radial arm saw were worn and the replacement parts were not available from any source. I bought these rods and drilled holes for mounting and cut to length and they work perfectly.Being this was a thicker rod than some of the ones people were saying came bent, it would be quite hard to bend this guy. That being said, I'm an amateur blacksmith, so a few bends mean nothing to me. Was a quality piece of metal for a decent price.I used this to make a pin for a woodworker's marking gauge. It was simple enough. Cut about 1 1/4" off and sharpen it to a point. As others had pointed out the rod was not straight when it arrived but it would have been a simple enough thing to straighten if I needed it to be straight. The finish is a smooth polish. I used it to replace the 7/64" aluminum pin in an aluminum piano hinge - it fit perfectly and swings smoothly.I ding this by 1 star because it was curved in the package. I was expecting it to be perfectly straight. I had to spend a while straightening it myself, and I got it fairly straight, not perfect but good enough for my application. This was the size I ordered and does the jobSomewhat pricey, but very straight, and highly polished with no dents or scratchesQuality piece of metal - I cut it into a few 11/16" pieces to check runout and tram my mill. Minus one star because it fell out of the box in my car (it was still straight). Good thing it wasn't in the back of the UPS truck!I ordered two of these. One was straight and the other bent.
