Product Description

The carbon steel key stock has a zinc-plated finish, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A108 specifications, and has an oversized tolerance. The carbon steel grade provides a good balance of toughness, strength, and machinability. It is magnetic. The zinc plating provides corrosion resistance and a smooth, reflective appearance. The key stock has an oversized tolerance, which makes it slightly larger than the listed size and provides a tight fit in a keyway. Key stock is used to make a machinery part known as a machine key, which fits into a mating keyway to transmit torque between shafts and hubs or bushings. Rectangular and square key stock shapes are the most common, while step key stock is used for damaged or inconsistent keyways.

I just received the four bars of zinc-plated keystock, size specified as 7/8"x1"x12". While there is a small barcode tag on one of the bars marked "7/8x 1 x 12" in small numerals, anyone with any concept of what 1"x7/8" looks like - and can read the large printed 1/2" x 7/8" printed on each bar - should have questioned the Amazon specification. But probably only had a stock number to go by. As received, the bars are 1/2" thick, NOT 1" thick; half the dimension I was expecting. Considering the low price and the fact that I can use one of the bars for part of my project (and probably find eventual use for one or two more), I'll keep them. But now I have to search the unreliable Internet for a 1" square (7/8" minimum) bar to finish my project. Just another irritation for not living in an industrial area (but my forest looks better than tall buildings).the material looked fine, but the wrong size was shipped to me. the keystock was 3/8 by 5/16 it was suppose to be 3/16 by 5/16. The "amazon" applied label indicated 3/16 by 5/16 but the material was labeled from the manufacture as 3/8 by 5/16 and the manufacturer was correct, Amazon had it labeled wrong.THis was supposed to be an oversized key stock. It measures exactly .250" and is not oversized at all.Empty boxWorks great.
