Product Description

The D2 tool steel sheet has been precision ground, meets American Society for Testing and Materials International ASTM A681 specifications, and has a standard tolerance. The D2 tool steel grade has high proportions of carbon and chromium for greater resistance to wear than A2 and A6 tool steel. It maintains good dimensional stability when hardened in air. The sheet has been ground to achieve the precise shape and size.Steel is an iron alloy with carbon and other elements that modify the steel to achieve specific properties. In general, steels with higher carbon content have greater strength, hardness, and wear resistance, while those with lower carbon content have more formability, weldability, and toughness. Carbon steels, which include most AISI-SAE grades in the 1000 range, are classified by their level of carbon content as low (below 0.3%), medium (0.3% to 0.6%) and high (0.6% and above). Alloy steels, which include AISI-SAE grades in the 1300 and 4000 ranges and above, incorporate elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and nickel to modify properties like machinability and corrosion resistance. Tool steels, which include most grades with a letter and number grade designation, have high carbide content for wear resistance, high hardness, and the ability to hold a cutting edge. Some tool steels are designed to resist deformation when used in elevated temperatures.Tensile strength, used to indicate a material’s overall strength, is the peak stress it can withstand before it breaks. Wear resistance indicates the ability to prevent surface damage caused by contact with other surfaces. Toughness describes the material's ability to absorb energy before breaking, while hardness (commonly measured as indentation hardness) describes its resistance to permanent surface deformation. Formability indicates how easily the material can be permanently shaped. Machinability describes how easily it can be cut, shaped, finished, or otherwise machined, while weldability characterizes the ability to be welded.

When I saw a 2 x 36 x 1/8" piece of precision ground D2 tool steel for $74 I wanted to jump on it asap. Ignoring the voice in my head that said "it's too good to be true." While the steel is 2x36" and precision ground it is not .125" it is .136". . 136" is not the right size for the project I intended and Not at all precise and I think that's why the piece I ordered was at a discount because I checked the price for a piece of the same exact size after I ordered and it the price had gone up substantially like around an extra $80. While I was going to return this I decided to keep it because if it is indeed D2 at .136 x 3 x 36" it is still a great price. I will find out after I heat treat a test piece and report back. If heat treat does not work I will finish my return. Heres to hoping it is indeed D2 and not O1 or something of that varietyI searched for some time for tool steel I could obtain for a reasonable price...and these D2 blanks are just what I needed.I've purchased two sizes, 1" and 1 1/4" X 1/4" X 18" and use them as wood turning scrapers for bowls and boxes. They come annealed, so first I grind them to the profile I desire on each end then follow the directions that come on the package to harden then temper the steel. D2 is durable enough to hold a sufficient edge to work perfectly as a scraper. I couldn't be happier with the economy or performance of this choice.1/8” came in at .2035”So far so good. We will know for sure after heat treatingSpot on product. Amazing deliveryEstupenda calidad definitivamente muy conforme con el producto, me gustaría más disponibilidad de medidas y un costo menor pero aún así vale la pena
